Abstract

AbstractTannia [Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott] is an edible aroid and a minor tuber crop belonging to the Araceae family which grows up to 2 m height with large and fleshy underground corm and cormels. Tannia starch is very important as they have many functional properties, which enhances the interest of the industrial sector in its production. Quality seed/planting material of released varieties is one of the most important determinants of tannia production, which influences the productivity and profitability. The efforts taken for several years may become futile, if true to type, healthy and disease-free quality planting material is not used. Therefore, quality of planting material of tannia with minimum seed certification standards assumes greater significance in the production of tannia for realizing higher yield and sustainable income in the long run. Seed certification standards covering general seed standards, land requirements, field inspection, field standards and seed standards have been developed for quality planting material production of tannia. Keywords: Seed certification standards, Tannia, Planting material, Field standards
