Performance of Sweet Potato Varieties and their Nutritional Profile under Punjab conditions

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate orange and purple fleshed sweet potatoes at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during 2013-14. Five orange fleshed sweet potato varieties viz. ST-14, CIP-440127, CIP-SWA-2, Kamla Sundari and Sree Kanaka, a purple fleshed variety ST-13 and a white fleshed variety PSP-21 (local) were planted with three replications in randomized block design. The results revealed that maximum vine growth and yield was with PSP-21. Whereas more number of tubers per plant and tuber yields were found in CIP-440127. The local variety PSP-21 registered with lowest tuber yield, but recorded with maximum dry matter, starch and total sugar contents. Higher amount of N, P and K were found in tubers of PSP-21, ST-13, ST-14, respectively. Maximum manganese and iron were found in ST-14 and Kamla Sundari, respectively. Higher zinc and copper were found in CIP-SWA-2. The variety ST-14 and ST13 recorded with higher β-carotene and anthocyanin content in tubers, respectively. Maximum ascorbic acid content was noticed in Sree Kanaka.
